RANGE SAFETY

SPEED LIMIT 10 MPH on all roads

All range rules are displayed on bulletin boards at each range. A Range Saftey Officer is on duty when we are open. A saftey card for individuals is available - and these rules are below. They serve well for a general safe shooting ennvironment.

Range Procedures and Rules - Safety Card

1. All actions on firearms are to be open and firearms unloaded except during actual firing procedure.

2. Don't aim any firearm from behind the firing lines for any purpose.

3. When a cease fire is called, and any- one may call one, all firing will end immediately. (It's normal to ask other people for just a standard target cease fire.)

4. During cease fire everyone on the firing line will step behind the yellow line away from the firearms which should be pointed down range "in the rack" or in the safest direction.

5. Only paper targets may then be attached in a manner to prevent bullets from hitting frames and to ensure safe impacting into the back stops.

6. Adjusting or handling of firearms or equipment on the firing line during the cease fire or when anyone is down range is strictly prohibited.

7. When everyone is back from hanging targets or removing targets, policing brass, etc., a ready condition should be called by the shooter calling "cease fire" and if the firing line is ready, firing will commence.

8. On completing firing, any targets used or hung will be removed by shooter, brass policed and any club staplers, scopes, etc., returned to their proper location.

9. Firing will be done only from established firing points and no cross firing allowed.

10. Fully automatic fire is not permitted on this range.

11. Ear and eye protection is required.

12. Children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult at all times.

13. During an organized shoot, additional rules may be in effect along with the above rules and procedures.

14. No alcoholic beverages allowed on the firing line. No use of Alcohol or Drugs before or while shooting.

15. Additional rules and procedures for the shotgun and indoor range are posted at these ranges.

16. All members will be responsible for the reinforcing of these rules.

OUTDOOR PISTOL RANGE: RAPID FIRING Previously considered as a guide as no less than one second between shots. In May of 2005, the SRC Board agreed that rapid firing is aimed - controlled firing but not defined or limited by any time interval. In September 2009, as a result of member abuse, the one second rule was adopted - one that an RSO can hear and enforce. Regardless of member ability - for whatever reason should an RSO ask you to "slow down" - please comply without argument. Any further issue thereafter should be addressed to the Executive Officer or Board member.

RIMFIRE: At the 200 yard line – there is a sign prohibiting use of rimfire ammuni-tion. The sign only prohibited 22 cal. - Board affirmed the rule to include all rimfire ammunition. Sign is changed.

50 CAL BMG Board approved prohibiting use of 50 CAL BMG (cartridge/ firearms) on SRC Ranges.

Range Rules for Minors: This applies to all minors shooting on any of the SRC ranges.

  1. Any minor shooting must have adult supervision as further described below.
  2. Adult supervision is here described:
    1. Shooters must check in with the range officer on duty before shooting begins.
    2. The adult will carry the firearms to and from the firing line.
    3. One adult per minor supervising at arm’s length at all times while on the firing line.
    4. The adult may not be shooting or engaged in other activities while supervising a minor shooter.
  3. The following exceptions to the above rules apply and are Board approved by separate actions:
    1. For pistol shooting only, a minor must be 14 years of age or older. (This rule only affects children under 18) (Minimum age increased to 14 by Board vote in Jan 2005)
    2. Minors who have earned unescorted privileges as a member of the Junior Rifle Team are exempt from the escort requirement (By-Laws).
    3. Minors participating in authorized Hunters Education classes on club property are exemptfrom the escort requirement.

RANGE SAFETY: The importance of this practice cannot be OVER EMPHASIZED

This is what you see when first entering the north range complex. Actions on firearms are to be kept open at all times while on the range unless in the actual act of firing. OPEN at all times – even while being carried around the range – and don’t forget to visually clear the chamber and/or magazine while “safeing” the firearm.
