News Update - 17 January Spokesman Review

Furrer fires way to junior record

Spokane’s Amanda Furrer put together a record-breaking performance in qualifying for the Junior Olympic Rifle Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Furrer set a Junior Women’s National Record in three-position rifle 50 feet with a 584, beating the record of 577. The score also equals the current women’s record. The three positions are prone, standing and kneeling.

The National Junior Olympic Championships will be held April 8-26.

Furrer, 18, is a Mead graduate and is a freshman at Ohio State University.

MEMBER's BULLETIN FOR FEBRUARY 2010

Welcome New Members: Members who have joined recently; Jeff Andrus, Jerry Steiner, Edward Bartlett, Scott Rahn, Marvin Boyd, Charles Busch, Rick Darnell, Andrew Davis, Richard Gauntlett, Michael Kaley, Robert Knapp Jr., Patrick Lockwood, Andrew Miller, Mike Murphy, William Reichert, Stanley Reynolds, Mike Stephens, Mark Stephens.

SRC BOARD MEETING NOTES

President Bob Orth again called upon all members to contact either a board member or a chairman with any ideas for projects that need to be completed this coming year. The board is also looking for a contractor to give us bid on moving the trap houses. This would include both concrete and electrical work. A blue print is presently being completed.

Just a couple of notes here, remember that if there is a question on any range, about safety, schedules, speed of fire, etc., the Range Officer has the final word. No if’s and’s or but’s. Anyone questioning or challenging the Range Officer’s decision may be asked to leave.

It was brought to the Boards attention that the furnace control board in the Indoor Range had failed and needed to be replaced. Cost was $335. A few days later the large exhaust fan motor in the Indoor Range also failed. After much searching around a replacement was found and installed by SRC members. Needless to say this saved the Club some big bucks, but was still pricey at $950. Thank you to all those that gave of their time and expertise to get that beast installed.

To add insult to injury, the septic system plugged up and all three tanks needed to be pumped out along with one of the drain lines needing to be roto-rooted. This was another ‘hit’ on our pocket book of $993.

The good thing? These three expenses occur about every ten years so it looks like we’ll be able to stay warm, breath clean air and use the bathrooms for quite sometime.

The Spokane Police Dept. has requested to use our range on June 7, 2010 for sniper training. This would include everything from 200 to 600 yards and may require the range to be closed that day. More to follow.

A special thank you goes out to all those that have been so generous in their donations to the Junior Program. They have received $550 from outside donors and $1000 from the SRC.

Expect to see new and much larger bulletin boards installed in the North range, Trap club house and the Indoor Range. This will provide more space for legislative info and updates.

Just a reminder to those using the North range. As you arrive and depart the parking area, please don’t stop or hesitate. The trap shooters, as a matter of safety, must hold their fire until a vehicle passes.

In one recent incident a vehicle stopped just at the exit of the parking lot and sat for several minutes. The signs are there for a reason, be courteous.

Hunters Education class registration sponsored by INWC is now on our web site. This is the first time we offered this, so all you youngsters and parents that want to get signed up take advantage. Go to Home page for details

While I’m on the subject of our web page, we currently have 215 members signed up for the e-mail list. To help the Club save a few bucks we’re trying to get as many as possible to receive their bulletins via their e-mail. If you haven’t already done so, go to our web page and sign up. It also saves your Secretary a heck of a lot of time.

MEMBER vs. Guest vs. Public: We are OPEN to the public on Friday and Saturday at our North range - and at any scheduled open TRAP or Indoor Range. Public (read any non member) are not permitted general access to the SRC at other times. Membership is a family membership entitling members and immediate family access to the SRC at any time. Members may bring a guest (non member) at any time at no cost – one guest per member - and only use this privilege once for each guest during the year.

Unintended Consequences: As it is now – you can only bring your grandchildren on Friday or Saturday to the North Range. At the General Membership meeting the motion making the non member fee $1 for a member’s grandchild was a compromise motion. Earlier a motion that essentially redefined family membership to include grandchildren was ruled out of order. Everyone understood the intent – but – redefining family membership is a By Law change. It could not be done because our own By Laws prohibited it – even though there was a quorum at the meeting. There are very good reasons why it is hard to change By Laws – it prevents motions, such as the above, from being adopted by a small part of the club.

“Big Read”: SRC will sponsor a shoot off at the Indoor Range on March 6. This is open to the public as part of the Library System “Big Read” program. They will do all the advertising and regis-tration. The plan is to accept the first 150 entrants – we believe this is a good way to support the community and get advertisement and good press.

RENEWALS: Letters were sent out this year earlier than usual. We are processing them as received and have reduced the backlog.

February 1st is the deadline for renewals. By Laws let members renew at any time during the year – up to the 31st of December if you want - we just ask you not use the ranges until you do renew.

New Initiative - E Mails: New – we asked for e mail addresses on renewal forms. We are getting about a 35% return rate with e mail addresses. Thank You - providing this info is voluntary.

Why? Currently when a bulletin is ready – it is posted to the web site. That’s it – just put there with no notice to anyone. There is no set date to post – only after the Secretary finishes the bulletin. Members have to go to the web site repeatedly to see if a new bulletin is there. Not convenient.

We hope to send e mail notices whenever a new bulletin was posted. Eventually a subscribe / unsub-scribe function automating the mailing list may be developed (it is manually typed it for now) There are future applications for e mail communications – send the whole bulletin, renewal notices etc - but this is a program in development. Warren Walker (X Secretary) will remain the webmaster for the web site.

Soap Box

Assault Weapons Ban for the State of Washington: A group of four State Senators has introduced Senate Bill 6396, legislation that would bring California-style gun-control to the Northwest and ultimately ban many semi-automatic firearms commonly owned by Washingtonians. Like the failed Clin-ton Gun-Ban that sunset in 2004, this bill is about demonizing certain firearms based on how they look, not about crime fighting. This gun ban scheme will only punish law-abiding citizens and will do nothing to curb crime or keep criminals from obtaining firearms illegally. This is simply another attack on our Second Amendment rights in Washington State.

NRA While widely recognized today as a major political force and as America's foremost defender of Second Amendment rights, the NRA has, since its inception, been the premier firearms education organization in the world. But their successes would not be possible without the tireless efforts and countless hours of service our nearly three million members have given to champion Second Amendment rights and support NRA programs. As former Clinton spokesman George Stephanopoulos said, "Let me make one small vote for the NRA. They're good citizens. They call their Con-gressmen. They write. They vote. They contribute. And they get what they want over time." You can join/renew at the clubhouse.
